Gamma Mathematics (NCEA Edition)

What's new?

The textbook has been completely reorganised – covering the full spectrum of the nine NCEA Level 1 Achievement ‘strands’ – shown by the content grouped by the colour-coding shown below

AS 1.1 Use straightforward algebraic methods and solve equations
AS 1.2 Sketch and Interpret Graphs
AS 1.3 Solve problems involving measurement of everyday objects
AS 1.4 Use geometric techniques to produce a pattern or object
AS 1.5 Use statistical methods and information
AS 1.6 Determine probabilities
AS 1.7 Solve straightforward number problems in context
AS 1.8 Solve right-angled triangle problems
AS 1.9 Use geometric reasoning to solve problems

The 33 chapters of Gamma Mathematics (NCEA Edition) reflect the organisation into the nine NCEA Level 1 Achievement strands.  Click here for the chapter outline

Features of Gamma Mathematics (NCEA edition) include:

  • Full colour throughout
  • New investigations, as well as many of the popular ones from the first edition
  • New application questions added everywhere
  • New puzzles and cartoons
  • New ‘communicating mathematically’ sections
  • NCEA Revision sections for each achievement standard – each question clearly indicated as ACH, MRT or EXC
  • Indexed to navigate quickly between exercises and answers
  • Full emphasis on using relevant technology throughout
  • An associated Gamma Mathematics (NCEA Edition) Homework Book (to be published November 2004)
  • Data sets and spreadsheets that can be downloaded from this website.  They will also be included on a Companion CD that is bundled with the Homework book

There are also changes in content to reflect how NCEA dictates that the New Zealand Mathematics curriculum be assessed:

  • Capacity and Liquid measure for 1.3 Measurement
  • Geometrical patterns and designs – new emphasis for 1.4 Geometric Techniques
  • Data sets (both univariate and bivariate) for 1.5 Statistical Methods
  • Simulations/probability experiments for 1.6 Probability
  • Expanded coverage of geometric proof for 1.9 Geometry

A special ‘technology’ icon appears wherever a graphics calculator or software package would help students. Spreadsheets are used, and in many places there are references to applets and webpages that are linked from the www.mathematics.co.nz website and the Companion CD.

There are plenty of new investigations – in the same style as other books in the series. These are both independent of, and related to, the coursework. Many of these investigations could be profitably used when preparing students for the internally assessed NCEA Achievement standards.

There are many mathematical puzzles included.  These will motivate students – some are quite challenging!
